The New Liberia in its Wednesday, February 24, 2021, quoted Health Minister Dr. Wilhelmina Jallah as “First ever Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) equipment to be installed in government Hospital.”

According to The New Liberia Newspaper, Dr. Jallah made the statement when she appeared during the Ministry of Information regular Tuesday’s press conference.

Dr. Jallah said the DNA machine is in fulfillment of President George M. Weah promise made during the state of the nation address.

Factcheck: In April of 2018, the United Nations Mission in Liberia donated a DNA Machine to the JFKMC to strengthen the government’s efforts in combating impunity for perpetrators of rape and SGBV cases.

During the turning over ceremony, the Country Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to Liberia, Uchenna Emelony, told JFKMC administration that as defined under Security Council Resolution 2239 (2015) Sexual Gender-Based Violence is part of UNMIL’s operative to strengthening government’s efforts in combating impunity for rape perpetrators.

Verdict: FALSE

Though there was an initial DNA Machine installed at the JFKMC, our verification established that the previous machine is currently non-functional.
