Nimba and Grand Gedeh counties will go to by-elections on April 23, 2024.
Section 1.2(h) of the election law states that “by-election” means any election other than a general or special election as provided for under the provisions of Article 37 of the Constitution and otherwise includes selections called to fill vacancies created as a result of the unexpired term in an elective position other than the Presidency and the Vice Presidency.
The National Electoral Commission (NEC) is to supervise and manage these by-elections. They are also to ensure that polling stations, voting procedures, ballot counting, and vote counting are all consistent. It provides the free enjoyment of the rights of voters, candidates, and lists of candidates.
Section 4.2 of the amended election law states that “there may not be more than 3000 voters per precinct. The list of candidates should be published 90 days before the election. Additionally, polling place listings can be modified 48 hours before the election.
Polling and candidate information are given to magistrates via administrative authorities for publication of the list of voting stations within their authority via posters, as well as notification to candidates and lists of candidates.”
The elections in the two counties are a result of the death of Erol Madison Gweion and Jeremiah Kpan Koung’s election as Vice President of the Republic of Liberia, respectively.
Davidetta Brown-Lansanah, NEC head, said the commission activities in the two counties, specifically the candidate nomination and the publication of the final listing, there are a total of 19 candidates: 4 candidates for the senatorial elections in Nimba and 15 candidates for representatives in Grand Gedeh.
Lansanah disclosed that 141 voting cards have been replaced for both counties.
In Nimba, 23 females and 61 males constituting 84 cards were replaced, while in Grand Gedeh County District No. 1, 28 females and 29 males constituting 57 cards were replaced.
There are 327,661 registered voters for the two elections. 307,254 are to participate in Nimba County, while in Grand Gedeh there are 20,407 registered voters.
Madam Lansanah’s ballots disclosed that the campaign is launched in both counties until April 20 and ballots have arrived for both counties’ elections.
