Claim: Entire CPP endorsed President Weah’s re-election
Full Text: “Good News!! The entire CPP people have officially and overwhelmingly endorsed the re-election of President Weah in the ensuing presidential run-off election on November 14, 2023. Let’s welcome all of them on board the winning team of the mighty CDC in order to motivate other people to follow suit simultaneously for the betterment of Mama Liberia. Vote #2 on the ballot papers for GMW. Keep following SAPA TV Liberia for more authentic and fact-checked information.”
SAPA TV-Liberia with 994 followers, is a pro-government online platform that informs the public and persuades them to vote for Mr. Weah for another six years.
The institution took to Facebook hours after the president and several members of his CDC paid a visit to the office of the CPP political head to negotiate CPP support in the run-off election.
The Collaborating Political Parties (CPP), advanced 12-point agenda items for discussions and consideration as conditions for its support in the run-off to either the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), of President George Weah or the Unity Party (UP), of ex-Vice President Joseph Boakai.
Verification: We commenced a check and found that the image accompanied by the post was taken during an October 24, 2023 meeting between Alexander Benedict Cummings and incumbent President George Weah at the CPP headquarters in Sinkor.
Our search established that indeed the CPP did endorse the re-election bid of Weah but not the party in totality as some endorsed Mr. Boakai while others including the political leader Mr Cummings have distanced themselves from the decision to endorse neither the CDC nor the UP.
We also take into account the absence of Mr. Cummings at the two separate endorsements.
Conclusion: Based on our search, we found no supporting evidence that the entire CPP endorsed the re-election bid of Mr Weah and his CDC. The claim is misleading.
