Round 4: A lead left hook shows Mayer is starting to time Wildheart’s advances nicely. The late replacement responds with a left of her one, though. She’s certainly not overawed by the step up in class. Mayer scores well to the body, although she ships a few hooks carelessly – left, right, left. That’s good work and probably gets Wildheart the round.

Wilkinson became a fixture in the boxing venues of James Figg. Both Figg and Wilkinson were skilled self-promoters, and Wilkinson frequently engaged in trash-talk in her printed challenges. For example, in a published acceptance of a challenge from Ann Field, an ass-driver from Stoke Newington, Wilkinson declared that “the blows which I shall present her with will be more difficult for her to digest than any she ever gave her asses”. By 1726, Wilkinson also frequently fought at James Stokes’ boxing amphitheatre.

George saw something different. Back in Jersey, George worked to fine-tune Zhang’s skills. Chin tucked lower. Hands held higher. “At the same time, not change him so much where he doesn’t know how to use his feet,” says George. “Because he’s actually really quick on his feet. But you guys don’t know yet. He has pretty good hand speed, but you guys are actually just noticing now.”

In 1995, Zhang was called up to the Shenqiu County canoe sprinting team by coach Li Guofeng. When Zhang injured his leg during a tryout for the provincial canoe sprinting team, he was referred to the provincial boxing coach Gu Ganqing. In 1998, Gu signed him to the Combat and Weightlifting Center in the Henan Provincial Department of Sports, headed by center chief Li Yan in Shangjie. From 1998 until he was released from his sporting obligations, he was coached by Gu. This was the first time Zhang had lived away from his family.

The fight was allowed to continue, but with Joyce’s eyesight clearly hindered – and being repeatedly peppered by Zhang’s punches – referee Howard Foster recalled the doctor in round six before deciding to save Joyce from any more, potentially long-lasting, damage.

Round 4: Wilder keeps just pawing his left out there, waiting for a miracle of perfection to show the way for his right. Wilder has landed 9 punches through three rounds. Yeesh. Zhang not lighting the world on fire with 27, but still.

Following his death on February 2, 1918, his New York Times obituary called him the world’s “most popular ring gladiator.” Not until Babe Ruth, Red Grange and Bobby Jones dominated the sports scene in the 1920s, did an athlete command the country’s attention as John L. Sullivan. And it was not until Joe Louis captured the heavyweight crown in 1937 that a fighter’s reign lasted longer. For a time, Sullivan was bigger than life. He had transcended sport, a symbol for the entire nation awakening to its status as a world power.

Sullivan deserved a rest. At 31 he had accomplished more than any man could expect, rising from a working-class Boston Irish upbringing to become the nation’s first sports hero. “I’m getting too old,” he said at the time. Like most fighters, he hated to train, finding it increasingly grueling to drop highest weight division in boxing as he got older—self-denial was never among the man’s natural attributes.

“It’s very disappointing. First couple of rounds he got it right and he was moving left. Then he went toe-to-toe and got caught. If he continued to do what he was doing past five or six rounds then it would have been interesting. He got caught with a really good shot.

There has understandably been plenty of excitement over the sort of challenge Joyce might pose to reigning champions Fury and Usyk, but the sight of him failing to get his head off the line and Zhang thudding home sledgehammer lefts at will was wince-inducing. Fury and Usyk’s superior speed, skills and angles would have made light work of this version of the Juggernaut.

Mike Tysons itch to fight, superstardom and the significant tattoo on his face, are the three things that still replicate his aura. Mike Tyson has featured a tattoo on his face for quite some time. Tysons tattoo is also a popular symbol world-wide, especially after it was used by actor Ed Helms in The Hangover.

Round 3: Zhang moves him around with easy. Wilder’s corner implored him to do something, saying they don’t want him to be a punching bag. For the first minute of this round he is. He’s just not punching. Zhang moves him to the corner, hits, Wilder moves away, and it happens again.

It’s also a big coup for Netflix, as live streaming a pay-per-view caliber event is sure to reshape how the streaming industry thinks about live sports on major platforms, though Amazon’s big moves acquiring sports streaming rights alongside the other big platforms shows they’re already on the ball. I think we’re really in for a historic event this summer and something that might really push the streaming world even further into sports.
