Claim: 19 persons have died tonight at the ELWA hospital due to LEC power shortage, LORD HELP US! 🙏😢💔

Full Text: A social media account named Isreal A.K Kandakai posted on his Facebook page a claim that19 persons died on Saturday night at the Eternal Love Winning Africa hospital due to a Liberia Electricity Corporation power shortage.

The post attracted 55 comments, 66 shares and 127 reactions.
The ELWA Hospital was founded by SIM in 1965, to serve the medical needs in the community surrounding the ELWA Radio compound in Paynesville, Monrovia, Liberia.
Verification: Dr. Ricks Sacra, Medical Director, ELWA,  on the post said “This information is not accurate. There was no power outage at ELWA recently. Please disregard. Thanks –the medical director”
At the same time, a WhatsApp message was sent by Chester Smith, head of National Health Promotion, National Public Health Institute “ A rumour is circulating stating that 19 patients died at ELWA Hospital due to a power outage and lack of oxygen. There is no truth to this rumour. We have been very well served by LEC during this crisis time, and we also have backup power. We do want to emphasize that COVID-19 is real and is currently circulating at very high levels in Monrovia. Many patients are sick with COVID-19 and other conditions at ELWA and other health facilities. Please wear your mask, both in public and indoors.
–Dr. Rick Sacra, MD Acting Medical Director, ELWA Hospital

Conclusion: Though in April 2021, The Stage Media reported that the health facility was turning down patients due to a power outage, it is safe to say that the claim on Facebook is Unproven.
